Settlement outcomes of migrants

ASR completed the SONA study (settlement outcomes of new arrivals) in 2010. The study involved a qualitative component followed by a large scale quantitative cross-sectional survey of humanitarian, family and skilled migrants who had been living in Australia from 12-60 months. This study was a first for the department and potentially for the world. Using two pilot tests, ASR and the then Department of Immigration developed a self-administered paper questionnaire which was mailed to a random stratified sample of 20,000 recent migrants.

We obtained around 8,500 complete response sets which is an excellent sample. The results identified which groups have settled better than others and what services have helped in the settlement process. Analysis lead to a draft predictive model of settlement.
